The Work of Art in the Age of Digital Reproduction

He is a member of the Competence Network of the German Digital Library (Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek), the country’s portal for cultural heritage.

  • In 1797, Napoloen’s armies looted it from Venice and brought it back to France. For the last few hundred years, it’s been displayed in the Louvre in Paris.
  • In 2006, a team including the Factum Arte digitally scanned and ‘mechanically’ reproduced a replica to be placed back in it’s original site at the San Giorgio Maggiore cloister in Venice.

  • Nowadays, an important market for large-scale reproductions already exists in dedicated places, such as the Chinese artist village of Dafen near Shenzhen in Guangdong prov- ince, China, where reproductions are human-made. Indeed, in Dafen paint- ers specialise in the production of large numbers of replicas of oil paintings of public domain artworks, i.e. artworks created over 70 years ago. The high qual- ity reproductions are sold in many coun- tries for a relatively low price.
  • A reproduction of van Gogh’s Sunflowers, painted with exactly brush strokes, costs only 40 EUR; and Dafen Village produces some five mil- lion hand-crafted paintings a year, which is supposed to equal 60 per cent of the world market and a volume of sales of 30 million EUR (Dlugaiczyk 2015, p.98f ). These figures enable us to anticipate that there will also be a substantial market for digitally produced high quality three-di- mensional reproductions of artworks, especially with future prices for facsimi- les going down due to the growing avail- ability of high-tech printers.
  • As a consequence of the ever increasing distribution to a wider audience, there can be no doubt that a precise three-dimensional copy will definitely influence the perception and appreciation of artworks and museum objects. The potential impact cannot be overrated, insofar as the dissemination of this specific form of digital reproductions will not be limited to museums, but made into a cultural commodity. However, the production of digital facsimiles will not be the latest technological development. Additionally, there will be digitally created new artworks in the style of long-gone artists as the example of The Next Rembrandt indicates.
